How we check
- We record the price of each tracked offer about once a week, more often for the most viewed ones. Every reading is dated.
- The price is judged against readings of the same offer, at the same store, excluding the last week: today's price is never compared with itself.
- A was-price is "seen before" if one of our readings from the last 90 days reaches it within 2%.
- Our readings are spaced out: a price charged between two passes can escape us. This is an observation, not a forecast, and never a judgment on the store.
In the US, the FTC's Guides Against Deceptive Pricing (16 CFR 233.1) say a former price should be one at which the item was actually offered, openly and in good faith, for a reasonably substantial period.
